It’s that time of year where we start to remember just how good we got it, get into the merry holiday spirit, and shop till we drop. I know I may sometimes have the perspective of seeing what I don’t have as opposed to what I do but it is always good to stop and remind myself just how good I have it.

I got to spend another awesome Thanksgiving with my family and my extended family which is always a blast filled with good food, a buffet table of desserts, and of course the usual tradition, a rousing competitive game of Taboo. Yes, we are serious about that game and if you play with us you better bring your best stuff or be prepared to hear the trash talking.

Now you’re probably wondering where the dazed part comes into play and that’s because… Black Friday, of course. No I wasn’t one of those crazies out shopping right after diner. No, I was one of those crazy retail workers. I worked 9pm-9am. Yep a good ole 12hr shift. By the time I was done I was so tired I was awake. Of course then I went shopping at Barnes and Noble because well… I’m crazy, also they had good deals, and you don’t, you know, always make the best decisions when you’ve been awake for 24hrs and counting.

So to all my fellow retail workers of Black Friday I salute you and hope you eventually got some sleep and to everyone one else I hope your Thanksgiving was awesome and you found some things to truly be thankful for.

14 Signs That You Need to Get Moving

Sometimes we are so good at doing nothing, that we don’t even know when we are doing it. It’s not until the day ends, or sometimes even later, that we realize we basically didn’t get anything  accomplish. Oh sure we were super busy doing stuff, but then why does it feel like time some how got wasted?

This is part of the reason I keep a Me Year journal. Every night before I go to bed a reflect on all the things I did that day and only then do I truly assess just how much or little I’ve actually done. So based off of my own faults and things culled from others, here are some ways to know that you probably need a kick in the rear to get back on track.

1. You spend too much time on social media

Oh social media with your endless scrolling pages of topics and click bate headlines. Why must you be so enticing that we become mindless drones and sucked into a Rip Van Winkle esque blackhole. Who knew there were so many videos of puppy laughter? If a click away will I miss something? How does one hack at life?

Run it’s a trap! How much time are you spending on social media? How much time really? And in that same instance how often do you check your email? You might be spending more time than you realize.

2. You stare off into space

This is exactly what this sounds like. You basically stare off into nothing while life continues on until something captures your attention back. It’s a real good time waister.

3. That project you started was about as complete as it was two years ago

Go ahead, make a list of all the things you’ve started and never bothered to finish or things you keep saying you are going to get to. Are there a lot?

4. You’ve been at that “temporary” job for four years now.

So I’m not going to lie and say that I am not guilty of this because I totally am. In my defense (which by the way is not a valid defense at all) I have skipped around jobs and been promoted at my current one. But the point of something being temporary is that it will eventually change otherwise it is as good as permanent until you change it.

5. When people ask you questions about your life you make up answers to make you sound better.

I just…hahaha. If you have ever caught yourself playing off a really old accomplishment as something recent or making excuses for your current life then this is you.

6. Life has become a series of habits.

You get up, you go to work, you go home, you go to bed. Then you do it all over again, and again, and again. You’re life has become a stalemate and so predictable that family and friends some how always know what you are doing and when. Yikes.

7. You have the same resolutions on your list EVERY year.

Oh looks like I didn’t complete all these things on my list yet again, I guess I’ll just cross out the top and put the new year on it… done.

8. You’ve become overly content

You used to want to do and be all these things and go to all these places but somehow you don’t feel that way anymore. You’ve laid down in a field of poppies and forgotten you were even there.

9. Someone says to you “You haven’t changed a bit”.

And the moment that someone says that and you realize, it’s true.

10. You have no idea where the time has gone yet you’ve completed nothing.

What do you mean it’s 10pm. It was only 6pm like two minutes ago!

11. You daydream all the time.

In the car, in front of the tv, in the shower, there is no limit. Here’s the question what you are you daydreaming about? And do those dreams mean something?

12. You’d rather sleep

Oh man I really should finish ____ but I think I’m going to sleep instead.

13. Too busy doing the little things.

Sometimes we become really busy with the little things in life. Sometimes the big things are just so overwhelming that we use the little things as an excuse to not do the big things. “Look how busy I am I can’t possibly get that big thing done.” What we fail to realize is that big things are actually many little things just wrapped up in a ball. If we break them down then the big thing won’t seem so big anymore. 

14. You’ve become a big green jealousy monster.

This one is a huge indicator. There as has been studies done about Facebook and other social media outlets and how they affect people’s moods. They found that more and more people are jealous at what they see other people doing. They see other people having a good time and they wonder why their life isn’t like that, not knowing that what they see is only half of the story.

If you find yourself being constantly jealous at what others have and are doing then you need to reassess your life and figure out what it is about your life that is so unsatisfactory and change it.

So hopefully these tips will help you realise if and when you need to kick into gear but know that even with these tips you will never change what you tolerate. You have to want to change and to want to get better. You don’t have to start big. Start with something small and continue to add on and before you know it things will have changed.

This is Your Life

I read an article today about how we, as millennials, continually compare our experiences with one another to asses if we have taken the right path or if we have completely messed things up. Here is the gist of what it said.

Everyone is worried about their choices. Those in cities worry if they’ll ever get out to the country, and those in the woods think they might be missing the opportunities of city life. Young professionals are terrified they’ve forever bid farewell to fun and freedom, and those with throw-away jobs are down about not making as much money as they could be and not appearing accomplished enough. Some who are dedicated to school want more room in their lives for other things, those with roomy lives desire that space to be filled. Single people want relationships, settled people wonder if they’re missing out on something, traveling types miss stability, stable ones are restless, old friends want new friends, new friends miss old friends, and basically almost everyone my age has some dangling worry trailing around after them everywhere that they’re somehow not doing everything, that what they’re doing is not altogether the right thing, that they are missing out.

I read this and thought “man that is so me”. I look at friends who seem to be traveling all the time and wonder why I’m not doing that, I look at friends who have stable careers and wonder why I don’t get a “real” job, and I look at those who seem to be so collected in the life they have and wonder why I’m not like that.

The truth of the matter is… they are wondering that same thing. I guess it’s that whole grass is always greener on the other side outlook. We take for granted what we have, what we’ve done, and where we are because we are so busy looking at another person’s life.

Here’s the thing, you don’t have it all together and neither do they. Paths were chosen and decisions were made and that is how you got where you are, but if you are so busy looking at what they are doing with their life you end up missing out on what you could be doing with yours.

The author of the article addresses this to people in their twenties but honestly I think this is a lesson for everyone, regardless of age. So take a look back at all the great things that have happened to you and the things you have to look forward to because those things are pretty awesome too.

Currently Reading: You Can’t Fire Everyone

In this book Hank Gilman, the former Deputy Managing Editor at Fortune, talks about his rise in management and how it was kind of just thrust upon him. He talks of all the mistakes and lessons he has learned since then.

What initially drew me to the book was the title and the cover art both very catchy and of course it is short, which is good because I don’t always have the longest attention span.

In this books he talks about dealing with employees in regards to how you aren’t their friend but their boss, hiring and firing, and dealing with a mess up or crisis.

One of the biggest parts that stood out to me was: Never worry about being fired yourself. This kind of just stuck with me. So many times I held myself back because I was afraid of losing my job and therefore I was taking any of the necessary risks that I should have.

I think the worst thing you can do as a manager is be afraid of being fired. You would never do the things I suggested… if you worried about being fired.

Another aspect was just treating employees fairly; not lying to them, or underestimating them, giving them a chance to grow, and allowing them to put family first.

For the most part the book had a lot of good points when it comes to management and leadership. On the other hand though it was very heavily laden with journalistic examples and jargon, and sometimes conclusions wouldn’t make sense and what the author was trying to convey didn’t come through.

Overall I found this to be an informative book and good for those who have become managers but really don’t know how to be one.

…no matter what what your management style, it will work if you do it well, are honest, treat your employees with respect, and are consistent.

It’s Snowing…Nope

Today I woke up to the sound of snowblowers. Yes, folks, it is officially that time of year again…sigh. Of course in MN we don’t do winter here half way, no sir, it is always go big or go home. So MN went big, currently 2″ and counting, and I, of course, stayed home. Granted it did help that I already had the day off (though I do still have to go to work tomorrow… le sigh).

What does this mean for me then? A day of hot tea, writing, and of course eventually shoveling the driveway. On the flip side I was actually planning on spending it at the Library anyways but quickly nixed that plan. Funny enough though, part of the reason I was going was because I have a book due back today but I’d rather collect over due fees than go out in this.

“One does not go out in the snow if one can avoid it.” Pretty sure that is a legit MN proverb.

Did I mention I’m currently watch vehicle number two try to get unstuck from what seems to be a rather sticky street? (correction it has just been updated to three… nope four now including the mail man).

Well as I continue to write as the snow falls outside my window I can only hope it brings inspiration and dreams of a much more snowless place.
